Shaw councillor and Oldham Liberal Democrat Leader councillor Howard Sykes MBE has welcomed the news that work on Dunwood Park tennis courts is “finally” nearing completion eight months after Oldham Council claimed the courts were finished.

Councillor Sykes said, “The resurfacing of the courts is now finished and once it’s all cured and ready, the nets will be installed.  This is only eight months after the Council tried to tell me the work had already been completed.  Better late than never.”

In July of last year, Oldham Council issued a press release claiming the tennis courts were open for use, despite leaving the work at Dunwood Park incomplete and the courts unusable. Sykes intervened following reports from local residents that the courts had simply been jet washed and left vacant with no nets.  The nets were eventually restored but only after many weeks had passed.

Councillor Sykes said: “It’s a bit of a bad joke that it’s taken the Council so long to actually finish this work despite claiming credit for doing it last year.  But the new courts look great and hopefully will now get a lot of use.”
