Oldham Liberal Democrat Leader councillor Howard Sykes MBE has welcomed news that bus fares will remain capped at £2 in Oldham and Greater Manchester despite the Labour Government’s decision to increase the cap on bus fares from £2 to £3 across most of country.

Councillor Sykes - who is also the Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson for Greater Manchester - said, “The £2 cap on fares has clearly helped more people use public transport.  This is good for the planet and good for people’s pockets.

“The Labour Government have said that they won’t put up costs for working people, but for most of the country, this announcement will mean a 50% increase in the cost of the daily commute.  It’s a disappointing step backwards for public transport but it’s good news that Oldham and Greater Manchester are protected from the fare hike – at least for now.”
